I have a 1983 50 hp merc, I have had the carbs rebuilt several times over the past few years but always causing a problem. I can crank the motor and it will idle but when i put it under a load it will sputter and only run at minimal speed, but if I keep squeezing the squeeze bulb fast enough it will run fine. I took it to a mechanic again today he said it was a problem with those carbs on that model motor after a certain age. he suggested buying new carbs but they are $200+ each I dont want to spend that kind of money on an old motor. any suggestions? Thanks

Sounds like you might try going through the fuel pump(s) with new diaphrams, and check valves.

that is good advice. that would be my choice.

the pump kits are fairly cheap and very easy and strait forward to install.

mine were about 12 dollars and i got a great deal for them at mercruiserparts.com
