new to the forum, thanks to everyone in advance. I have a 1983 7.5 hp evinrude that is not pumping water very well. New water pump installed by a dealer but still is still not pumping. Dealer tells me it may be clogged at the gromet, but may take 3 hours labor to remove powerhead and check it. Estimate may be more than it is worth. I am contemplating taking the powerhead off to find this gromet. Is this complicated? I am an average shade tree mechanic.

What makes you think it's not pumping well, is it overheating?

Have you tried cleaning out the telltale from block outward, line and fitting? Could be what the mechanic is referring to is the problem.

Pull your thermostat and run the motor to eliminate that part. If the watertube grommet under the powerhead is indeed clogged, it would act as you describe, and powerhead removal is required. You need 1/4 drive ratchet and extension. Disconnect fuel, shifting and throttle linkages and get at the main bolts from underneath. You'll likely need a new powerhead base gasket for re-assemble.

I am picking it up today from the mechanic and that will be the first thing that I try. I have never tried to remove a powerhead to get to this so called gromet. The mechanic tells me there are 6 bolts to remove? Have you ever removed this to get to this so called gromet?

But first, after thermostat-free test, pull lower unit and try blowing air up the water tube. Without the tstat in, it should be relatively free, even if telltale is clogged. If not, probably upper grommet pinched/clogged. Could try a wire up that watertube to try to clear, before the dreaded powerhead removal..haha

I have on a 9.9, powerhead comes off, unbolt the exhaust tube and replace the grommet. Installation is reverse with a new powerhead to exhaust hounsing gasket.
