My motor has the non adjustable/fixed jets. I'm having some issues and have heard the fixed jet carbs can be part of the problem. Can anyone recommend a good upgrade set of carbs as far as what year motors. Currently looking at a set from a 94-97 but not sure if they would work and another set off an 88-89..

the 2 models that came out in 1983 some carbs came with the fixed set up such as yours all you need to do is unscrew the jet & get a retainer valve put it in place of the jet then screw the needle valve in these 2 items will solve your problem & no need to change carbs . just turn the needle valve out 1 1/3 or 1 1/2 turns out on each carb you should be all good . you can get these 2 items from older model carbs

The fixed jet system works very well with few issues. Adding needles from an earlier system will add a layer of unnecessary complication. What, exactly, is your motor doing or not doing?

its the other way around the complications started when they came out with the system he has now , & for the last 43 years my motor has been running with the needle system trouble free & will run for another 43years trouble free

Re: 1983 70hp Johnson carb upgrade

Bought the motor used.. Started motor before buying and also checked compression. Motor needed a tune up for sure and owner stated he had taken it to the lake but could rarely get it to come up on plane because it would stall out and die when you tried to take off. He had other boat so this one set around for a few years before he decided to sell.

1-Compression is 120's all 3 cylinders.

2-Overall looks pretty clean and unmolested.

3-things i did..rebuilt carbs (set floats etc, etc as per manual), rebuilt fuel pump, new plugs gaped properly, all new fuel lines and inline filter. Ran good on muffs. Took it to the lake, falls on its face and dies as soon as you try and take off. Fuel bulb pumped up tight, air valve open on tank, filter full of fuel.

4-took it to boat mechanic for link n sync. He tweaked and checked it including a new rectifier. He said spark looks great. coils and power pack look newer. Ran great on muffs and in tank. Take it to the lake and it falls on its face as before. In most cases just dies and cannot get it up on plane at all. Mechanic even stated he wished it had adjustable carbs the first time I took it to him.

So.... Been reading a lot about others having same problem and in many cases it seems related to the nonadjustable carbs...

My next lake test will be choking it upon trying to take off and or giving it a light squirt of premix into carbs upon takeoff to see if I can verify its a fuel issue rather than throwing stator, pickup coil etc at it which = $$$..

Also going to recheck timing...

Found a cheap set of adjustable carbs, serial #'s show they are from 1986 60 or 75 hp motors.. ??? Seems another guy went that route and it fixed what he called the two year struggle to get his 70hp running correctly.

Any thoughts appreciated...

Not meant to high jack, but does this same issue apply to the 83 50hp engines with the fixed jet carbs?

So all I would have to do is find part # 30 and 31 from diagram in link provided ?? would I have to use an o-ring also like #25 to seal the needle?

Also does part # 27,orface... stay in or get removed?

I am having the absolute EXACT problem that snwwlkr describes above. Knowing that there is a fat chance being this thread is 10 y/o, I desperately would love to know the outcome of snwwlkr's carb issues. Its been a while since Ive been on here, maybe I can send him a direct msg to ask him? Gonna try it.
Thanks,
