Alot of people probably come here with problems I just wanted to post something positive.
The only reason i decided to spend the money and get the outboard in the first place was the man convinced me he knew these motors inside & out. He burned up a dyno machine a year testing these motors. He could sell me a motor that hadnt been seen by his service department, bigger newer & cheaper. He made it clear that this motor was solid and had 1850lbs of torque and that was a lot for a motor of that age. He put a 6 month 100% & 6 months 50/50 gaurantee on it because he was confident in that particular motor. This made me feel comfortable with the motor. I bought the motor

Re: 1983 80HP Died...... while under warranty

Clicked out by mistake...

So i used this motor several times and was constantly taking it back for repairs of idle high. Wont idle. Hard starting. Losing power. Etc...
My fishing partner & I had used smaller bass boats since we were kids. This nice platform boat was a long time coming. Due to work reasons my friend was unable to get here until several weeks after i purchased the boat and was beginning to have problems with the motor.
Finally we got out. First area we found we started catching em'. Moving into the next area of the river, about 4 miles from where we started the motor just DIED!!!!
Dropped it to the dealer and 2 weeks later i have my boat & motor back. With a Brand New Powerhead out of the box!!!! Ready for break in.
No hassles no fuss. Just here's your New Power head, click PURRRRRRRRRRRRR. Oh & we rebuilt the carbs and changed the water pump too. NO CHARGE.
Being new to the world of outboards & outboard dealers I feel I've looked quite extensively and the people I trust is Almars Outboards in New Castle De. They have stood behind thier word 100% To this Date 11-20-03

Good story, BoatRage.

It is good to hear about honest dealers. We hear so much about bad ones.

One question, though. 1850lb (lb.ft.)of torque??? I doubt that. That is a torque range for a 1200hp to 2000hp engine. A 80hp engine in great shape might peak torque at 85-100lb.ft.

Perhaps he was talking about the typical outboard dyno readout, which is in psi (pressure, not torque). 1850psi is a reasonable output for a good 80hp outboard.

Good luck. :)

Probably was PSI. I am new to this terminology and environment. They did BS a little. Of course thats par for the course when dealing with a dealership. Dealing with 6 different people. SOmeone's bound to get some wires crossed sooner or later. However i am satisfied @ this point and will post as things progress. Sad thing is my window of use is closing due to winter closing in fast. I plan on breakin' her in this weekend and doing some fishing. My initial 6 month 100% warranty will be done by the time spring hits. I believe in her now though. New powerhead means practically a new motor, Right?

I was wondering if a new powerhead would have a factory warranty?

Re: 1983 80HP Died...... while under warranty

I was hoping for a new factory warranty, but thats not the case. These guys are just not wanting to see me back in there. They were easily in the right just giving me a piston & some parts and a few hours labor, but since they have the largest inventory of Mercury parts in the country (& they happened to have several new powerheads for this O/B) they decided it would benefit everyone to swap the whole powerhead. When asked why the old one gave out, they said It was 20 years old!
About the year all i know is it has the blue & white stripes, Red 80. Almars has it listed as an 83.
Break in went great. Even had some time to fish around and caught a few stripers. Only thing now is the RPM's are only @ 5000 WOT. I got a new prop on the way already. Going from 17 to 15 pitch hoping to get the extra 500 rpm's.
The worst part is the the weather is so cold that it aint much fun running up & down the river right now. I am not gonna run it again until this prop comes in and i get a decent day.

Well I wish you lots of luck with you motor, and even more luck catching those stripers.
I just got a 1983 85 hp, are there any suggestions or any heads up about this type of motor, Is It a good build?, decent on fuel? And do you have any parts I may need in the future, you also said the place you went to had alot of parts. Do they have a web site?

I have a bayliner with a force that I just rebuilt but Its bad on gas and top speed is about 30 mph, I'm trying to decide If I should swap motors. As long as Its ready for the stripers next april.

I believe the force has a smaller prop and not knowing the HP of it who's to say. a Comparable size merc oughta get your speed & efficincy up as well. As for Almars, they have no site yet, but you may call them @ 302-382-8541.
