1983 85HP: Water Separating Fuel Filter- where to mount?

As I've been going about catching up with the maintenance and sometimes upgrading the systems of my boat to make it less likely that I'll have a break down, it's now time I improve my fuel delivery. I want to install not only a disposable, in-line fuel filter along the line just before the carbs, but also a "water separating fuel filter". I thought about mounting it on the wall under either of the jump seats next to the gas tank. Where is the best place to mount this? There's a $5 difference between the Sierra and the Mallory versions. Any recommendations? Thanx.

I have the same boat as you and mounted mine underneath where the fuel tanks go.
I have 2 6 gallon tanks under there and the water seperator fit perfectly over the tank on the passenger side.

Dan, my boat came one big black gas tank that's seems anchored in place back there (I don't want to even think about what I have to do if I ever have to take it out). I've never filled it up, but I know it's at least 10 gallons. There's no room where the tank is. I figure that I can only mount it under the jump seats next to where the batteries are. I have batteries on both sides, one for the motor and on the other side, one for the trolling motor. I'll PM you for specific questions about our boats. Thanx.

Anywhere close to the gas tank where it is out of the way, yet easily accessed to replace the filter cartridge.

Yea close to the motor.
The one to buy is the one that you can get the filters easily.
I bought the one from Wally World. They are cheap and they always have the filters.
The more expensive ones from Mercury etc look nice but the paint peels away anyway.
The small filter between the carb and the pump: Again Wally World, G-2 or G-12 depending on hose size.
Remember, to much stuff in the line?Like connecctors and filters, etc.
The pump is a low pressure pump and can't handle running too many accessories.
I removed all the quick connectors as the Force ones started leaking.
If you need a quick connect, change to OMC or Yamaha connectors.

A filter from Wally World and then a small filter between the carb and pump.
The small one is a G-2 or G-12 both from WW
You can spend a bunch on a Racor with the clear bottom.
But your having trouble with room or a space to put it.
If your running in fresh water, you can mount the filter in the splash well.

Pretty much personal preference as to clear bowl or not. Advantage of a clear bowl is obvious if it is mounted in a convenient spot where you can actually see it. I have a fuel filter/separator with a clear bowl that is mounted by the tank, but I find that most of the time I look at the "see through" filter that I have installed between the fuel pump and carburetors to verify fuel quality and debris.

If you do get water in your fuel, most of the clear bowls have a drain **** you can use to get rid of any trapped water. I've never had this happen so I don't know if this is really a plus.

One other thing to keep in mind is the cost of the replaceable filter element.

I forgot to add: the big filter with the glass bowl.
It's long and might be harder to find a place to mount it.
