Hi this is my very first boat project, it is a 1983 Bayliner Capri 16ft with a 1984 85hp force motor. I picked it up for $500, test drove it once and ran pretty good. No major damage, everything is original since 1983, just some wear and tear in the interior and a few wood rot. Here are some pictures, I will continue to post more as I progress with the restoration of the interior and will need your help and feed back. Thanks!:D

I tore out the old carpet to reveal some rot. Then I cut out some wood rot around the ski locker.

Remove the boxes with a grinder with a cut off wheel. You can get most of the cuts enough to get it out. Just be careful and don't cut into the hull. And wear a good respirator to avoid breathing the dust.

i had one of these last year...i loved that Force OB, easy to work on...

my floor was about in the same condition as yours..the PO wedged some PT dimensional lumber to help resupport the floor...had to rip all that out...

prepare yourself to find some rotten stringers in the back half of the boat...

but all in all, it was a fun boat...i only had mine less than 6 months...needed something bigger

Thanks tschmidty, I did exactly what you said and purchase a grinder. I don't know if it is the right size, I tried to grind that box off but didnt get to far and had to use a crow bar to pry the box off but no luck. So i might have to exchange that grinder for a better one

thanks mrdjflores, where are the stringers located on this bayliner? I did some research on stringers on google but was not quite sure if I was looking at the right thing.

Re: 1983 Bayliner Capri Help Needed

pick you up a thinner disc for the grinder...i used a 3amp grinder and it cut through like butter when cutting through glass....

for cutting through some of the wood...i put one of those 4" circular saw blades on the grinder...

just don't cut through the hull...

as far as the stringers..if memory serves me right, the stringers make up the sides of the ski locker...they run almost completely from front to back of the boat...

search the restoration forum for "capri"...i believe there are a few others on here that are getting complete transformations

A thinner wheel would help but it looks like you made some good progress. The grinder looks good. The only thing I can say is maybe cut the boxes into smaller pieces and try to take a piece at a time rather than all at once. There is foam inside that runs all the way down through the deck to the hull that will make it hard to just pull off in one piece. So make vertical cuts at the corners, pull the front piece off. Or cut around the top and then you can start digging at the foam to make the other sides come off easier.

And yeah the strings are either side of the ski locker and bilge and go the full length of the boat. Besides the rot the boat looks like it's in good shape, I think you'll have a nice little boat there when you are done.

As stated previously be careful not to cut the hull. The way I did mine was to start from the middle of the seat base then work front to back. Those back and front panels are almost molded to the hull on the outside near the hull but, rest on the floor near the center of the boat.

Thats mine.

Thanks for the pictures, they helped out alot. Is it better to have a fuel tank like yours which goes on the floor or a portable tank? where is that bottom fuel tank of your located? is it in the ski locker?

Here is what I have done so far to the box on the driver side!

It was pretty messy, the foam was everywhere.

I notice the box connects to the wall, did you guys use a grinder to seperate it?

Did you have a portable fuel tank or one that was under the deck?

Re: 1983 Bayliner Capri Help Needed

well you are humming right along.

I used a small electric vibrating saw for areas close to the wall of the hull. Picked up one of those electric multy tools from HF. Took some time but easy to control so no going through threw the hull.

It looks likes you are using a pry bar to remove foam, a really fast but messy way is a grinder with a wire wheel. It rips threw that foam and turns it into dust, then just vacum, I used a shovel to remove large areas and then in tight areas I used the wire wheel.

I'll pick up a wire wheel today and grind away. Finally the rain is gone and I can work on my boat.
