I just purchased this boat, a 1983 bayliner capri with the understanding that the block was cracked. I verified this and am now at the point of removing it. I have everything disconnected including the bell housing bolts. Is it removable without pulling the out drive assembly or does it need to come off?. I was asking someone that is supposedly familiar with these but I wanted a second opinion. He said it must be removed because of the shaft from the out drive to the flywheel connection, you cannot slide the engine forward. I disconnected the motor mounts completely so there's every reason to believe that it can go forward. I am a seasoned auto mechanic but for boats this is a first. If the out drive does need to be removed any information is greatly appreciated on the sequence as well as the do's and don'ts. Thanks again for your time. rookie1:rolleyes:

Since you just bought the boat, and the engine is toast, it seems to make sense to pull the drive and check things out.

You don't mention the type of drive, but if it's a Mercruiser, the drive is pretty simple to remove. Put the shift in Forward, pull the 6 nuts (and washers) which hold the outdrive leg to the bell housing, disconnect the ends of the hydraulic trim rams, and slide the drive out. If there is resistance, lever the drive off with wooden blocks by lifting the drive up (tilting it up) and placing wood between the drive and the bell housing, then pushing the drive down. The shaft goes through a large radial bearing and can get sticky - there are o-rings and potentially rust if moisture has done dirty work... The drive must be in forward for a linkage set to disengage between the drive and the bell housing assy.

first off we need to know what engine and what out drive you are working on, second i have removed an engine without removing the outdrive, it is easier however if the out drive is removed. As far as removal of the out drive is concerned it all depends on the out drive, i would suggest getting a manual for the out drive as it will tell you how to go about removing it.

It has a Penta 280 out drive and the boat is between 19' and 20'. Thanks for the replies. Rookie1

Pull the drive......
You will also need to inspect the u-joints,gimbal bearing and everything else while its off.
And you will need an alignment tool after the motor is back in and before the drive goes on...
