Hi guys i have a 1983 eska sears gamefisher 5 hp. I just pulled it out of storage Cleaned everything up and put fresh gas and oil in her. Now it will start but only at full throttle and it seems to be dumping gas out the exhaust. Would this just be a carburetor problem or is there a engine problem too?

thank you that was it the fuel pump element. now my problem is i cant get it to idle. How do you adjust the idle on these carbs?

you have two adjustments to make, the first one you do with the flywheel off by syncing the carb throttle butterfly rod to the ignition cam, I could go on all day about the subject but I can't see to type that much...you need the Tecumseh 2 cycle engine/carb manual,,,search for it and it will tun up and if you have questions I will help,

Seconed thing is the idle mixture jet, " one full turn out from soft bottom", if you have a pointer wheel it should be at 12:00, the manual will tell you all of this. do not worry about BTDC timing and what not, its actually preset by the SSI timing stop tab and bracket, what your looking for is your engines best idle acording to the cams interaction with the butterfly rod, generally I leave about a 1/16ish at full throttle and what ever is needed at idle..usally just a close fit...if she don't idle smooth use the idle adjustmet screw/jet to richen or lean as needed.

PS, I have tuned some really crappy running Tecumseh outbaords and nine time out of ten the problem with idle starts at the Ignition cam and throttle butterfly rod....sync= how much fuel and how much spark and how many cranking RPM's it takes to make fire at with throttle in Start position...usally 235 RPM to 265 everything else is elementry, and it should start on the seconed pull no problems or its just not right unless crank seals are leaking and you don't see many of those with Tecumseh...the best outboard engine ever! ;)
