Hi All

Glad to have found a site like this!! I"ll try to keep it as short as I can.

Background info. Didn't have the cash to buy a boat but found a deal I couldn't pass up. Boat and trailer just needed a bunch of work that was not complicated. I'd worked in a 'glass boat factory a bit so nothing new to me. Even rigging new engines. But repairing engines is another deal. I"ve got one marine mechanic as a friend but he's part time(did go to school) and works on small stuff. Plus my knowledge and an inlaw thats a regular full time auto mechanic.

Deal is that owner said a mechanic looked at engine and said it needed lots of work. Needle bearings shot etc... I can't afford a new engine so we took a chance and bought the whole rig anyway.

Lower unit is fine. Have it off to replace the impeller anyway.

Pulled exhaust cover #1(have never started it-thats a long story IE no key and we started replacing rusted bolts in the meantime) and out falls a quarter sized rock. Hmmm. Did mechanic drop it in, replace cover and show him how bad it sounded then? Or where else do you get a rock that big from??

Cylinder #1 was not firing(adds up to why it ran really rough for him)

So continue to pull the exhaust to see pistons. 4 look ok. 1 of those has a bit of scratches. 2 pistons have oil blow by and basically stuck rings.

Right now we are about to pull all the exterior stuff off and get it to where we can simply pull the pistons and re ring them all, clean the cylinders some, try to wash the block without removing it from the boat(may not work???) and then check the main bearings just in case. I suspect the main bearings will be fine but we'll look anyway.

Also I'm going on the assumption that if I get it all back together and run into an ignition problem that it will be fixable and create no troubles IE should have never done the ring job first.... IE waste of money and time.

Later if I get this far it needs some trim work. New trim motor but an oil leak when you manually lift and lower.

Need the info on where the best source of parts etc... will be from.

Have a Seloc book which made me think, Ok I can do this on my own. Very informative.

All advice/thoughts on the adventure are welcome. I don't think the motor has tons of hours on it. And we won't be using it much either. Maybe 10 trips to the bay a year and a couple of offshore runs.

Thanks, Jeff

PS forgot to add that one steering cable had to be driven out with a mallet. Rusting inside the housing closest to the motor. I'd assume find a round brush and put on a drill motor and extension and polish it really good and then oil and I'll be ok there then??
Thanks, Jeff

Re: 1983 Evinrude 200 rebuild??

Welcome aboard, Jeff!
There is only one way to do this if you want it to run right, and that's a complete tear-down and evaluate every moving part. I would not include pistons in that, I would recommend you plan for new pistons/rings/wrist-pin, all small and large end rod bearings, and by all means, an OEM manual.
The covers you are refering to are the intake port covers. which should have, on the '83, I think one small hose per cover, which are recirculation hoses...you'll read about them in the manual.
You need to make a decision on "How good" of an O/H you want, now. If you have the OEM manual, and follow it closely, you can determine what is needed.
Are you pretty well stuck to a budget on this???

One more thing. You can't do any of it without pulling the powerhead. Have to do that to split the block and get at the crank and piston rods.
Be sure and let us know what you find when you get in there.

Re: 1983 Evinrude 200 rebuild??

HI Kenny thanks for the reply.

My issue with the budget is that at some point I can have it rebuilt or go with a used one. I'm not that tight on a budget though. Don't know where to look for parts either. Around here in rural USA everything is marked up so dang high you can't afford it. So WWW is the ticket for me I suspect. Just need to know where to go.

The Seloc manual pretty well covers the rebuild. And my buddy went to school for boat motor repair but didn't want to do it full time. His instructor said it was rare for pistons to need replacing... but thats one instructor.

Bottom line dollar wise-- I'd like to keep parts to around 500 bucks or so. Maybe 1000 max.

Thanks for input, JEff

Okay I'll pull the power head. They are only rusty bolts that need replacing anyway and I"ll bet the block is easier to clean and work on while its on a bench anyway.

THanks, JEff
