I have recently introduced myself to the world of outboard motors by buying a secondhand Evinrude (E2RCTD). This worked beautifully in the dustbin running for about 15 minutes before getting a bit hot and stopping (I put this down to the lack of flowing water coming into the impeller). A few days later I took this out in the sea and had about 40 minutes of running in total. It seemed to run best with the choke left half out. It did cut out on 2 occasions. However, at no point did it seem as hot whilst running as it did in the dustbin. On the last time the motor cut out I thought it had run out of fuel, so refilled the tank, however I have not get the motor to start again since.
I have replaced the spark plug and it appears to be giving a good spark. I have stripped apart the carburetor (twice!!) and cleaned and put back together. None of this appears to have helped. I have worked my way through the "Outboard won't start" in the FAQs. (I do not have a compression tester, but am considering purchasing one). I have also replaced the petrol. It has taken a number of hours to get this far and I'm now running out of ideas. Any help is gratefully received.
