1983 Evinrude 7.5 lower unit

I am having troubles dropping the lower unit on an 1983 7.5. i have removed the bolts but the lower unit only drops 1/4 inch, appears to be hung up on the shifting linkage. Any suggestions on how to get it apart.

The shift rod should simply pull from the bevel gear at the top. No join in it!

The drive shaft is very probably rusted into the crankshaft !

If you have a longshaft model try taking the 5" extension off with the gear case. I have to do that with my 6 hp yachtwin because the drive shaft wont slide through the bush in the extension until cleaned up.

If it's the drive shaft stuck brute force will eventually pull it from the gear case but the impeller drive key will wreck the water pump on its way through ( unless you are lucky enough to have an impeller with a plastic key)

Hopefully I can get it apart with a bit of force, the shaft will be definately rusted up after too many years on saltwater. I would still like to be able to fix this outboard for use on the river now.
