Thanks in advance for any and all help. This is a new to me motor... 1983 75hp evinrude It cranks easily and runs well above 2400rpm. At idle and and slow speed the top carb puddles up in the throat and it seems to lightly spit droplets of fuel. Lots of oil and gas in the water. The carbs have been cleaned and rebuild kits added. I have replaced the reeds but still the same problem. I have moved the top carb to the bottom carb and the bottm carb to the top. Still the top carb seems to have the same symptons. When looking at carb diagram on the internet it is to vague. It shows that I can have slow speed jets in 2 places(the top center of carb and the top left side of carb. When I take the carb apart there are no jets in either place. Should it not have a jet or should it have jets. If so, does it need them in 2 places or just 1 place. If so, which location should it be in. Please help if some one has this Knowledge. Thanks ,

There is no slow speed needle on any of the 3 carbs. There is part #26 in its place. The is no orifice in front of #17. Also I have not found any of the needles available. I have also read that some of these 75hp models had no adjustments for slow speed. Is that correct?
Thanks,

Yes, there are non adjustable carbs, and it sounds like that's what you have.
Have you owned this engine since it was new, could someone have replaced the carbs with a different style?
Does this look more like your carb?

I am a new owner to this motor. I have no idea if original carbs. 2 of the carbs have metal tags. Top carb is 393196c 75 18ci. The center carb is 393197c 75 08 bi. there is no nunber on the bottom carb. Some one may have mixed and matched to get 1 set of carbs. The carb lever plate on the second diagram is not on this carb. there is slight variations in each diagram. I guess I can assume the carbs are my problem. Do these numbers help you at all?

Longline,
Thanks for your help. Does your carb have 2 slow speed orifices or just one. If just 1, is it in top of carb or top left of carb. Thanks,

My 48 SPL 2 cyl does the same thing on the bottom carb spitting droplets of fuel out at low rpm. I thought for sure it was leaking reeds. A new set of Chris Carson marine reeds (fiberglass) & it still does not idle worth a crap. I have not noticed any oil or gas on the water & mine runs good over 1250 rpm. Altho it seemd to have less power on top with these reeds.

What Reeds did you use & did you do anything with the cages?

I have a 1992 70 hp Johnson. It spits a few droplets of fuel out of the top carb at idle. An OMC master tech told me it is normal. Evidently the crank oiling system internal to the block exits inside the intake manifold just behind the top carb. You will get a little spitback.

Thanks for your comments. I also used the Chris Carson reeds. When I ordered them I was looking for low speed to mid range performance. I don't run at wot very often. I was told to lightly sand the cages with 600 grit sand paper. Just light enough to take off any varnish or crud. Do not take off any metal. I think we have different problems. Mine seems to flood and has gas puddling in the carb throat. Yours may be running lean. Have you thoroughly cleaned the carbs. when I opened up my carbs there are not slow speed jets. I have some on the way. My problem is that there are 2 possible locations as per the diagram. I do not know whether I need 2 slow speed jets per carb or just 1. That is the question I need answered. I will keep you posted.
Thanks

Tom B,
Do you have 1 slow speed jet or 2 slow speed jets per carb. If only 1 then which locations is yours. Top center or top left side?
Thanks

Re: 1983 evinrude carb slow speed jets

Thanks for the info. I have been told the same thing also but I get puddles of gas in the carb throat and a lot of oil and gas in the water. A lot of unburnt fuel exiting the motor. I have ordered slow speeds jets to put in carbs.
