Hello,
I have a 1983 Johnson 35hp LS engine. The power head is excellent but has issues with the gearcase. I would appreciate some experienced guidance.
The gearset is the version with only two ears on the clutch dog which has notorious slipping issues and premature wear on the forward gear due to slow or high (cool engine) idle shifting. The engine is on it's third clutch dog and second forward gear. I have lost confidence in this gear set-up and want to convert if possible.
I understand that this two ear dog arrangement was changed to three in 1984 or 1985 for this and possibly the 20 and 25hp engines.
Am I able to swap my lower end with a later model (1984-89 or so) which has the three eared dog and mated gearset? The cases "appear" the same (window for shifter connection, drain holes and many other same characteristics) but the part numbers don't match on the case, drive and prop shafts. Many of the other part numbers are the same and I believe a second bearing is required for the pinion.
Is it also possible to simply swap the gears, pinion and clutch dog for the three eared version of later models while adding or substracting other components?
My second issue with my current gearcase is a missing forward facing 5th stud. It broke at it's base in the aluminum housing and can not be replaced with another. It is less
I hope I am clear and appreciate some thoughts on this. I may have to re-word some of this.
Thanks.
