1983 johnson 60 hp. will not turn off

motor starts and runs fine, but will not turn off. thought it was the key switch , put on a new one , but doing the same thing, have to choke the motor to turn it off, if any one has idea on what's up with this it would be appreciated!!!

You have a connection issue. Probably at the BIG RED plug, under the cowl.

Now that you have replaced the ignition switch, all, bets are off,

the kill circuit is the black wire w/yellow tracer leading from the powerpack. Connecting this wire to ground shorts the ignition, shutting off the engine.

Follow this wire from the powerpack, you'll come to a plug...unplug it, make sure it's clean & free from corrosion, making a good connection inside the plug, etc. You may have to push the pin and socket out of the connectors, make sure that connection is good.

In any case, that wire has a fault in it somewhere, look for any place where it might be pinched or bent, where it might break inside the insulation.

I have 60 hp evinrude 1982 there the same moter hade bad power pack fix that an changed rectifier also changed coils. now the motor turns over iv got spark on both cylinders good compression iv checked to make sure timing is on rebuilt carbs and still won?t go it fires once and smoke comes out like it should but it won?t stay running I checked the fix low speed orifice in the carb it seems clear could it be the pickup tube I don?t want to touch it cuz its plastic and the don?t send one in the cab kit. I was also wondering when u check the timing with the timing light what number should i see?
