Hello,
well me 1983 merc 115 is leaking oil out of the lower end seals, i am pretty good with mechanical repairs and was wondering if this is something i can do myself at home?
i have heard this job requires a special tool. do you know if this is true and where might a person get this tool?

Thanks
Chris

Where is it leaking? That gearcase has seals around the waterpump base, driveshaft, propshaft, shift shaft and vent and fill plugs.

I would do a pressure and vacuum test on the lower unit first. if where You.

Yeah man, and put some soapy water on all the seals to locate which is leaking. These L/U's can be quite a pain to change the seals on. Good luck finding(making) a spanner nut tool to get at the propshaft seal.......

Also, a lot of times the leaks are due to the drain and vent plug washers. Now that is an easy fix. :)
