1983 Merc inline-six 115hp- good or bad motor?

Hi,<br />Ive just got me a new used boat, at least winter-time is good for some steals.... That 5,20m boat is powered by an older 115hp Merc inline-six- from the enginenumber I can tell that its an 1983- model! I have some questions on this motor:<br />1. Since Mercury hasnt the best reputation over here in Germany Id like to know some opinions on how reliable these motors are? Some boaters over here told me that the inline six-cylinders are even worse than the rest?!<br />2. How much weighs such a motor? Cant find any data on the web- would be great if somebody knows the weight in kilos?<br />3. What fuel-consumption can I expect? I rather go cruising around at medium speeds, no skiing, tubing or 100%-WOT....<br />4. Where are the weak points on these engines or what do I have to watch or be carefull about?<br /><br />Im asking this because I think that I dont really need that much power on my boat. In case you guys state that these Mercs are problematic motors Id think about selling it and buying a smaller one like a 70 or an 80 horse- should be sufficient. Try using the red "search"toward the top of the page and enter something like "115 six" or "inline six" and read through the past posts for the answers to your questions.<br />If your engine runs good, has been serviced & maintained correctly and has good compression, run it like you stole it and enjoy!

I have the 1985 version of that engine on my 17' (5.2 meters) Arima. It runs great, starts immediately even when cold and runs smooth from 600 to 5600 rpm. I average 4.6 gal/hr. The unit weighs 315 lbs. That's 143 Kilos.
