Alright just started digging into the boat. Took off the 90hp johnson, found some cracks on the bottom of the motor mount and on top of the cap. Starting to remove the top cap. Might get it off if I ever finish pulling the 1000 staples!!! Also when I get ready to put the cap back on (in the hopefully not so distant future), how do reinforce where the staples use to be? Any suggestions help, I am new to all this stuff.
Thanks
Nigel

Re: 1983 nordic crestliner transom replacement

Now, I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but I am wondering, when I laminate my two layer of wood transom together should I use the polyester resin or glue it together? I think I have seen it both ways, just wondering if it matters.

You can't use poly alone. It isn't that great an adhesive. You'd need to add CSM to it.

Welcome to iBoats!

I have included a drawing of how I recommend doing a transom. It should help explain a few things.
As for your cap. It May have some adhesive sticking it together along with the staples. If it does use a sawzall and CAREFULLY saw it apart. When time to reassemble you can use some 3M 4200 to "Glue" it back and Rivet it back together. That's my recommendation.

Keep the pics and questions coming.

Re: 1983 nordic crestliner transom replacement

Excellent advise and thanks for all the info and help guys, it really helps. One other question I have is, do I want to fiberglass the whole transom board before I put it in or do I just glass it as I go?
Also doesn't appear that the top cap has any adhesive on it so far on the one side, I will be removing the staples from the other side tonight, then I will know for sure.
Thanks again, more pics coming soon

Well, got the cap off tonight, Was a bit heavier than I thought, I guess it was a three man job instead of two, but we got it done. cut must of the inner transom skin out and wood was pretty bad. I still have t inspect the stringers but storms looked to be rolling in so had to quit since its in the driveway. I will post some more pics of the progress tomorrow.

here are the pics of the transom and cap after removal. The wood is completely rotten. Cant believe the motor even stayed on, pretty much held on just by the fiberglass. Next I will be grind away the rest of the inner skin and get all of the wood out and sand whats left off of the outer skin. I want to pull out the seats and carpet to get a good look at the floor of the boat, hopefully don't have to replace that to.

Re: 1983 nordic crestliner transom replacement

Ok, decided to pull out the seats and everything bolted to the floor and pulled up the carpet. there are a couple soft spots in the floor so I am gonna pull it up. Does anyone know ho the floor is fastened to the stringers? What is the best way of removing the floor without damaging anything?
Thanks

Re: 1983 nordic crestliner transom replacement

Sorry, I haven't had any updates. I live in Minnesota and it has been near 100 degrees and humid almost everyday for the last week and a half. Suppose to cool down Thursday so hopefully I can tear into it a bit more in the afternoon.
