I have replaced the TT motor and topped off with ATF. When I engage the trim up or down, there is a creaking noise like something is sticking, and the motor seems to be struggling. Do I need to grease something or is there air in the system?

Where are you located? Is this a saltwater motor? New to you or did it just seize up? What position is it in currently? Hopefully the trim rod is not seized.

First check the manual release valve. Rest the motor on trail locks and re check the oil resevoir level. Then determine if the electric motor is running. If it is running, some internal passages could be blocked. Cycle the motor in 5 to 6 times to bleed the system of air.

If the motor is not running, let us know.

The motor was in saltwater before I got the boat, now in brackish, I'm in Lousiana. The electric motor is running, and I have filled the resevoir with fluid. It will go completely up and down but makes a creaking sound in the process. I have cycled it 4 to 5 times and it still makes this sound. Could there still be air in the system?
Thanks for your advice.

Be sure that you don't have your tilt tube too tight and that it is well greased.

You might want to loosen the manual release screw and move the motor manually to assure that it moves freely. Be sure to torque the release screw back to specs when you finish.

The judicious use of anodes will help to protect the T&T unit in the future, but there are a couple of tricks that will help: one is to always withrdraw the rams completely when the boat is not in use; The other is to frequently use triple guard grease on the trim rams and on the tilt cylinder rod as well.

Service manuals point out the need for a fully charged battery, but not that the wiring needs to be in excellent condition with clean contacts. Failing to have adequate power will cause the motor to struggle and make unusual noise.

Where the main tilt rod attaches to the upper part of the motor, this might need grease or oil the bushing do wear!

OK, what is the procedure to loosen and grease the tilt tube. I will also replace the wires that connect to the relays, as they are old and cutting in and out. Wiring Question, the wires that are going into the female end of the relay. Can they be replace or do I have to replace the whole component. (Does female end come with wires already attached?)

Thanks for help in advance

There are two grease fittings on the tilt tube pointing to the front. The Tilt tube rides inside nylon bushings, so as long as the tube is greased regularly, that should not be a problem.

There are nuts on each end of the tube that can be too tight so you may need to loosen them a little. Use an open end on each nut. I think they are 1-1/4.

The top of the tilt rod has a nylon bushing as well. It may need oil, but there is not a grease fitting there.

Re: 1984 115 Evinrude Trim

OK Thanks, I will check that out. Another question wiring. I want to replace the wiring going from trim switch wiring harness to the trim motor wiring harness, because they are all old (Black Box on the back of the motor where the relays are)
The wires that go into the female end of the relays, can I pull the wires out of these and replace or do I need to replace the whole unit, as with the male relay.
