I have a 1984 150 evinrude....the problem is it will start and run fine and turns up to 5500 rpm's on a water hose but when I put it in the water to run it will only turn about 1300-1500 rpm's when in gear. This first occured when going along about 5000 rpm's the motor shut off. Then acted like it had a very weak battery...turned over slow..so I let it sit for about 1 cigarette(5 minutes)it then started up and ran fine back to the dock.Next time out it did the same thing and I need to know what to look for !!!

Thanks in advance for your help !!!

It is on a 1984 hydra-sport dual console bass boat. 14 1/2 X 23 three blade raker prop.Nothing has been changed on it.I have ran this set-up for 4 years now.

bassinva- I don;t know the answer to your question but..........I do know that running an engine at anything above idle without a load is VERY VERY bad. When you run your motor on the hose you need to keep it at idle rpms only

Welcome bass!!!

What troubleshooting have you done so far? You need to find out what it is doing and what it is not. Try to narrow it down some and get back to us. We have little to go by at this point.

Compression?

Is it overheating by chance?

Have you checked for spark?

Checked battery connections for crud?

Checked fuel system?

Do you have the shop manual?

Re: 1984 150 problems need more help

Your explanation indicates a overheated engine, seizing as it encountered extreme heat. This would prevent the engine from cranking over properly. As it cooled, the seizing would release somewhat, allowing the battery to crank normally.

Does the warning horn beep when you turn the key to the ON position? Are you using the VRO setup or are you pre-mixing the fuel/oil?

What are the compression readings of all cylinders?

With the spark plugs removed, does the spark jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like spark? It should.

Check ALL your wiring and be sure everything is clean and tight. DO NOT run it that fast on just a water hose. How long has it been since its had a major tune up? Compression check????

It sounds like you have an ignition problem, and losing one bank of cylinders. Do you have a spark tester to determine what cylinders are'nt fireing when the engine act's up. The engine will wind up on the hose because there is no load on it. Don't take an engine up that high with no load, that could give you a nasty surprize. Anything will break, all you have to do is spin it fast enough. If you are losing one bank of cylinders, you will have to break it down to Stator, sensor, or pulse pak. Let us know what you find

no warning horn present when key is turned on
vro is disconnected from previous owner, I premix.
I ran the rpm's up on water hose and back down...maybe 2 seconds max from idle back down to idle.
water pump replaced 5-2005
new plugs 5-2005
new wires 5-2005
lower unit oil 5-2005
compression test 5-2005
all cylinders with-in 3psi of each other as of 5-2005

I have no service manual for this but am trying to locate one.

I have basically done nothing yet to find this problem.
this boat has no water pressure gauge or temp. gauge on it and appears not to have had it from the factory as there are no holes on the console.
It has speedometer, fuel, flasher, and tachometer gauges on it and that is all.If needed I will add the gauges that I need. I will do a compression check this week and a spark check.I also need to do the carbs again..were last done in 2003.
Battery connections are great and voltage is 12.98 when engine is running and load tested it also and was ok.
And again thanks for the help !!!

With the engine NOT running, have the key in the ON position. Find the TAN wire protruding out of the cylinder heads.

Approximately 4" or 5" from the head on that TAN wire, you'll find the metal connector whereas it is connected to another TAN wire.

Do not disconnect the wire but ground that conector out to the block. The horn should sound. If it does not, find out why as that is the only warning you'll receive if the engine overheats or encounters a fuel restriction.

Let us know what you find.

Re: 1984 150 problems need more help

compression test turned out ok and I found only 1/4 inch spark on 4 cylinders and 1/2 inch on 2 of them.Port side from top to bottom 1/4 inch spark and starboard side top was 1/4 inch and bottom 2 cylinders were 1/2 inch spark.

I tested my alarm and it works grounding it out on the head bolt.

I also found no fuel filter in my system coming from my tank ,which in plastic , all the way up to my fuel line connection on front of motor.

Please excuse me if I incorrectly name a part...I am a car and HVAC and restaurant equipment mechanic.

What do I need to check out next ?
Stator I would assume...if so this will be the second stator replaced on this motor in 3 years.

Bass,

Have you checked all connections for looseness, corrosion ,etc.

Are you checking the spark with the plugs in or out. Try it both ways and post results. Good spark w/ plugs out and weak spark w/plugs in could be an indication of starter ciruit problems.

You'll need a DVA meter and shop manual (preferably OEM) to troubleshoot the stator, power pack, and timer base sensors.

You can tell the difference in stators by part #. Also the flywheel and rectifier/reg. are different on the 35 amp sytem than the 10 amp.

Part#'s are as follows.

35 amp sys:
Stator #0582574, superceded to #0583668
Flywheel #0582572 superceded to #0583544
Reg/rect. #0582904 superceded to #0395204

10 amp sys:
Stator #0582867 superceded to #0583672
Flywheel #0582403 no longer available
Reg/rect. #0582905 superceeded to #0395204

weak spark both in and out.
I have a fluke multi meter that checks about anything under the sun. My manual was ordered yesterday...should be here in a few days.
I went thru and checked all connections on the motor...none were corroded or loose.

Well, with that meter and the manual you shouldn't have much trouble isolating the problem ;)
