I am planning on changing the clutch dog and reverse gear on my 175 horse evinrude. What parts besides the gear and clutch do I need, such as seals or shims? Do I need to pull off the whole lower unit? What are the steps for this? I have a manual, but it is not too specific. I am a mechanic, but I know very little about outboards.

Shay..... You need to remove the lower unit, and the unit will require to be dismantled in its entirety. I strongly suggest that you scroll to the bottom of this page to obtain a manual. That lower unit exceeds $2000 (new) if you make a mistake.

Thanks for the reply. You say I need to remove the whole lower unit? I was told by several people that the revese gear and clutch dog, could be changed with just removing the prop, snap rings, etc.

Shay...... Several people are wrong (grin). You could remove the reverse gear but that's as far as you'll get.
