Greetings all, long time lurker, first time poster.
I've aquired a 1984 28' Landau with the OMC 2.5L/Stringer 400 combo. Mod#252FTHRCTR
I have very little invested and this will be the perfect winter project. It seems the community opinion is not to get too deep, $$$, into the outdrive so I'm looking for recommendations.
Boat background:
Compression was good. Outdrive seems useable and no water in lower. The boat ran last year, "supposedly", but had no spark when I inspected it. I replaced the coil so it is now trying to start but I believe there was water in the tank before I added new fuel. At this point I decided good enough for $500.
My background: I've rebuilt a dozen plus engines from cycles to diesels but I've never needed to work on an outdrive. I also do considerable welding, including aluminum.
Goal:
Dependability! I don't need crazy speed and I don't want to spend a ton of money on a river cruiser.
Questions:
I see lots of Mercruiser stuff around. Is there a newer OMC or preferably Merc. outdrive I can marry to the 2.5L that isn't completely obsolete? If not, I'm thinking of harvesting a sensible Mercruiser donor boat for this project.
Short term, I will likely be getting this operational as is so I can drop 50 to 100 crappie structures this fall. Then, ?????, well, what say the community?
Input is greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time, Dave S.

You will need to remake the transom to close up the transom hole from the OMC

Thanks Bondo, I see you share much wisdom on this site. Could you recommend a Merc. for this project? Something that has lots of parts out there? Probably a 4 cyl but I'm open to suggestions.

Definitely gonna need some fab work. Fortunately, my son gets Alcoa aluminum plate at scrap price. Thanks for the input.

Suggest a 1992 or newer 3.0/alpha1gen2 long tail

Your pontoon is most likely 5052 aluminum sheet/plate

That's a huge help in the right direction gentlemen. I'll bet 5052 is spot on. The old transom will give me enough scrap to get the weld settings just right.
Thank you both.☺️

Hey Scott, I'm not finding information on "long tail". Is this a taller lower unit designed to sit deeper in the water? Thanks ahead, Dave

a longtail is a complete motor and drive, complete from pulley to prop

a bobtail is just the motor and transom shield, without the drive.

Ayuh,.... As Scott says, findin' a '91/ '92, or newer puts ya into the Gen.II drive, which is current production,....

3.0 with alpha one gen two ‘91 or newer. You will have to close up the transom hole. this is basically the same block as a 2.5.
