1984 305 thermostat

Which is the correct thermostat for a 1984 305 Mercruiser? 140? or 160?. Can one be used in place of the other?

Thanks Don. 898 isn't stamped or labeled anywhere. The spark arrestor plastic cover only indicates MerCruiser 288.

I've always been curious why such a cool thermostat is used in this application. Is there a problem using a 160? thermostat in a emergency which I carry as a spare? I see where newer sbc versions use a 160?. There must be some theory behind this but I'm clueless as to why!

Your attached photo shows 228 for the model.

Here is your manual, the link will take you to page 7A-2 which is in the Cooling system Chapter and shows the specs:

the manual is over 1000 pages so it takes a little to open.

228 takes the same thermostat as the 898.
