I recently purchased a 1984 pontoon w/ 1984 35hp Johnson electric start. Engine starts and runs great. However, question 1.)The engine has a 4amp alternator/stator and it does not appear to be charging the battery. The boat runs fine but I need to charge the battery every month. Volt meeter reading at the battery is approx 12V with and without the motor running. I am guessing a bad stator based on reading this forum. I also learned that a stator has three coils, Charge, Power and Charging System. Do I only need to change the Charging System coil? How difficult is it to change the stator (I know I need a fly wheel puller) but what other tricks do I need to know. Will I have to reset the timing or only make sure the flywheel goes on exactly where it came off? Question 2.) I had the boat in a slow forward idle to keep is pressed up against a dock for passenger pickup. While waiting to load the engine overheat buzzer came on. After letting the engine cool and then running at higher rpm in open water I have had no problems, no buzzer and water always comes out of the discharge. Is it possible I need to replace the impeller as it may not be working at max efficiency and that is why it overheated? Any simple steps/tricks to changing the impeller on this motor.

Hi Elk<br /> It's hard to say exactly why your motor overheated. I would strongly suggest that you service the entire cooling system. It sounds as if your entire motor is over due for service. I suggest you obtain a manual. This will give you step by step instructions. You will be able to test your charging system and know exactly what to replace and what not to. It will also make servicing the cooling system go a lot easier. Now I am not a book salesman nor do I get any rewards from Iboats. But I looked at their prices for manuals the other day and I got to tell you I don,t think you can beat the deal. If you don't want to spend the bucks then try the public library. Once you use theirs, you'll want your own.

I purcased the shop manual and performed some stator and recifier testing as suggested. First I tested the resistance of the rectifier for each of the leads to ground (I did not remove the wires from the terminal board) and they all had 1 ohm in one direction and infinity in the other. The manual says they should read 0 ohms and infinity. Is this large enough to make a difference? I also tested the resistance of the stator as specified in the manual and had a reading of 0 ohms in all cases when the value should have been in the .3 range. What are your thougts on which part is causing my charging issue? I am using an analog meter, is this accurate enough to test the stator given the small range of desired resistance values?

Best guess would be a new rectifier (about $40) to fix the charging system, and a new thermostat to fix the overheating problem. As with the rectifier, you can test the thermostat. For these items, though, I guess I'm more inclined to just replace them and see if the problem is corrected. The rectifier is the usual culprit, in my experience (just replaced on last week on my 9.9 Evinrude, and it fixed the problem). And the t.stat is ofen replaced anyway as part of periodic maintenance.
