I recently purchased a 1984 pontoon w/ 1984 35hp Johnson electric start. Engine starts and runs great. However, question 1.)The engine has a 4amp alternator/stator and it does not appear to be charging the battery. The boat runs fine but I need to charge the battery every month. Volt meeter reading at the battery is approx 12V with and without the motor running. I am guessing a bad stator based on reading this forum. I also learned that a stator has three coils, Charge, Power and Charging System. Do I only need to change the Charging System coil? How difficult is it to change the stator (I know I need a fly wheel puller) but what other tricks do I need to know. Will I have to reset the timing or only make sure the flywheel goes on exactly where it came off? Question 2.) I had the boat in a slow forward idle to keep is pressed up against a dock for passenger pickup. While waiting to load the engine overheat buzzer came on. After letting the engine cool and then running at higher rpm in open water I have had no problems, no buzzer and water always comes out of the discharge. Is it possible I need to replace the impeller as it may not be working at max efficiency and that is why it overheated? Any simple steps/tricks to changing the impeller on this motor.
