Is there a reason I would consider the 1991 vs the 1984 given same mechanical condition? The 84 with pull start and short shaft is $375 (seems cheap to me). the 91 (10hp less then the 84, still pull start and short shaft) is $1075.

Thanks for your help again. You all have been very helpful in helping me decide on a replacement motor. This week I will pull the trigger and buy one. I don't have a ton of cash to fix any problems with so I hope its reliable!

Thanks again!

The 25 is NOT 10hp less, but is in fact probably pretty close in horsepower. In 1985 they re-rated motors to be propshaft rated. The 1984 model was powerhead rated, which doesn't take into account horsepower lost in transition from powerhead to prop. The 35 is probably about 30 in 1991 horsepower. Probably wouldn't notice much of a difference, if any, unless you had a really heavy load...

if the 84 has good compression, spark, and the lower unit oil is clean. i would go for it. $700, you can do a few repairs, and still have gas and bait $$$.

Re: 1984 35hp vs 1991 25hp

would the pull to start be pretty equal between the two? How much more difficult of a pull is it compared to a 93 15hp evinrude?

I'm quite a novice and really appreciate everyones time and help. thanks again!

well a 25 is harder to pull due to cylinder size and compression, but a well maintained, correctly tuned outboard doenst require much of a pull. I have an evinrude 25hp made in 1988 and it takes 1-2 pulls on a cold start, then after that it only takes about 1/4 of the rope pull to get it started.
