So I rebuilt the carbs and the motor seems to be running good except for the fact that the air/fuel adjusting screw keeps turning loose when the engine is running. Do I add Teflon tape or some sort of loctite on the screws? Also, one of my winter jobs that I didn't get to was to move the tell-tale to the top of the motor. how important is it that I do it? Thanks in advance.

are there springs on each of the screws? if yes, put a bit of lube on them so that they don't turn with the screws, otherwise they will act as a torsion spring. and/ or hold the springs from turning when adjusting the screws. Also, don't add tape or locktite.

there are no springs on the screws and there were none in the rebuilt kit. just red washers.

There were several models that had a service bulletin requiring the tell tale to be relocated to the top of the cylinders. As opposed to their original location on the exhaust jacket.

??----The parts book does not show adjustabe jets for these carburetors.----That screw should be tight !---The carburetor is shown to have a fixed low speed jet with NO ADJUSTMENT on it.

Thank you. I adjusted them before I saw your message and it ran worse. That would explain why. I just got a new rebuild kit and I'm going to replace the welch plugs on the carbs. I can tell one of them has a pin sized hole in it. maybe that will help.

my next issue is reverse and neutral. I took off the shift cable at the engine, throttled the control box all the way forward and shifted the engine in forward. then I adjusted the cable until it slid on easy. worked good on the muffs but today on the water I had not reverse and it was grinding when I tried to go in reverse.

Repeat that but leave the box and motor in neutral.

So I did the shift linkage while in neutral. while on the muff,s as I try to shift into reverse, there is a clicking sound before it engages. any thoughts?

You can expect a click or two when the shift dog engages gears, especially if you move the handle too slowly. You should always move the shift handle briskly to minimize the clash of the dog in the gear face. How much play do you have in the cable?

Thanks. as far as the play in the cable, do you mean when I shift from reverse to neutral?

No, I mean if you detach from the shift lever on the motor, how far can you move it in/out (shifter handle in N)? Too much play will reduce how much you can move the shift rod. The cables do wear out (although I'm still running 1983 cables).

they seem tight.

Are you moving the shifter quickly when selecting reverse?

So I just tested it on the muffs. even if I shift fast it still clicks for 3 or 4 seconds. it seems to spin in reverse even while its clicking.

I am going to buy a manual for it, they don't come for specific years right? they are printed for a group of years and horsepower in the same book?
