Around here there are people on Kijiji/Craigslist who advertise outboard mech services and work out of their homes - some moonlight and have day jobs at marine shops. Might be an alternative to taking it to a shop and paying that overhead.

I spoke too soon. I had reverse on the muffs but not in the water. I'm at my wits end with this thing. we were crabbing today and after a while I couldn't throttle up. motor would just bog down. At one point I turned the motor off and it wouldn't start again. Turns over but wont run. had to have someone tow us in. this thing is killing me. I think its time to take it to a mechanic. problem is its too old for them to want to touch. thanks for your help. the saga continues.....
have you try move your gear shift by hand with the cable detach? im working on same motor and year and had no reverse when I work in the water pump. I found instruction on here somewhere. Said to remove the shift cable from the motor. Moved the gear shift by hand go in reverse and forward find neutral and leave it there. Then on the remote leave in neutral then adjust the cable to line it up and re-attach. You want to use a big tub or carbage can and fill with water to test out your motor the ear muff does not creat back pressure like you on the lake.

I'm working on the throttle adjustment maybe you can help me out? I'll sent PM so I won't steal your thread? Let me know if that okay.

I'm sorry, I just saw this post. I haven't logged on since my last post. yes, I tried disconnecting and adjusting by hand. it worked and then at some point while on the water I lost reverse again. I'm debating on giving up and just selling the motor. I don't mind if you PM me but I honestly won't be much help. I log on here for all my issues. I bought another boat with a 1993 85hp yamaha so I'm focusing on that for now.
