motor starts 1 or 2 pulls and will idle fine. give it about 1/4 throttle and it revs like you are giving it full throttle. has new power pack. new high tension coils. crabs were cleaned and adjusted to factory settings. the guy that did the carbs said that all seals were fine. still dont know what's wrong any ideas?

You don't give us enough information to be of help, Trevor.

Is it on muffs, in a bucket or in the lake?
Is it in neutral or in gear?

If this is happening when you are in gear, then most likely you have spun your prop. A spun prop will allow for a trolling speed, but anymore power and it just spins. When it starts to spin the motor over revs due to lack of a load.

You can verify this by putting a scribe mark on both inner and outer sides of the rubber hub. Take it out, and look at it again after, and if the scribe marks are not alligned, like they were, your prop is spun. For this you need to take it to a prop house to have your prop re-hubbed, or buy a new propeller.

with muffs, or in a lake, or in the ocean, all produce the same effect. and in netural.

a little update.

i thought it must be leaking air somewhere so i changed all the fuel lines. now the motor is revving like mad from the moment i start it. no matter what i do i cant get it to stop. again this is in the ocean and in netural.

Are the throttle plates fully closed? Is the stator at full retard of the ignition timing? Are you opening the throttle at all when starting?

When you say you can't get it to stop, does that include turning off the ignition and blocking the air horns of both carbs? How about pulling the plug wires?

Revving a 2 stroke over about 1500rpm when it has no load always risks thermal runaway. It goes into a diesel cycle in which neither ignition nor open throttle is needed to rev dangerously high. I wonder if this could be what is happening.

Re: 1984 55 evinrude crazy high revving

sorry for not being more specific. i can get the motor to stop via the kill switch. as soon as i start it it will rev and then i hit the kill switch and it will turn off. i have been thinking and i think you may be right. i had to have the throttle open more then i should have had to to get it to run before i replaced the lines. now by fixing the lines i'm thinking that the throttle is open way to much and will have to be adjusted back. i will try this and report back my findings. thanks for your help so far :)

seems like your throttle is stuck for some reason, check the timerbase under the flywheel first,be sure the linkage that connects the timerbase to the throttle arm is connected,it will be on the starboard side ,same side the cables come in,if that seems ok,look at the butterfly plate in the carb and make sure its in closed position,if its not ,chek cables, you can disconnect the throttle cable and then manually operate the throttle ,you may have a broken cable not pulling throttle back
