Hi Guys,
I've gotta a 1984 60hp Johnson which seems to have some sort of fuel issue at times. If I run at full throttle to long the engine will start to bog.....fast...slow...fast...slow. So far I've changed the fuel pump and hoses and don't seem to be sucking any air. Next I'm going to change the bulb and hose to the gas tank. When I hit the choke things level out.....seems to be starving for fuel. If anyone has any suggestion I'd appreciate it. Thank!!

Have you looked at the pickup tube in the tank? Do you have a water separating filter - or if not, have you made sure there's no water in the tank? I've had intermittant issues similar to this caused by these problems.

Sounds like a possible tank venting issue as well. Make sure the tank is venting good.

I've got a few tanks and they all do the same thing. No water separating filter to my knowledge.....i'll have to look. I really don't want to take the carbs off etc because i'm not that familiar but it may lead in that direction. Who knows if it would even fix it. These tanks have no vents....they are the old omc orange ones. Thanks for your input guys. I'm gonna keep pluggin away.

If they are the old tanks, they don't vent.
The old tanks used a 2-line system...one for fuel and one for pulse-air to push fuel torwards the engine.
If the fittings have been changed, these tanks will not work.

as a matter of fact i could probably confirm they don't vent as when they have been filled up and when i release the cap, the pressure releases. only thing is my Dad used them on his old johnson some 25 yrs ago. Couldn't tell you if he had the same issue. I would think not.

Well I loosened the gas cap and still no luck. Next I'm gonna try changing the bulb but it seems like it working. Maybe the hose is to long? We'll see......

When it starts to bug down and you squeze primer bulb a couple of times, does it help, and can you feel the bulb pumping ?? If you can, forget about the tank went/pickup problem. Will squeezing bulb help it ?

I'll try squeezing the bulb next weekend when I have someone with me. My dogs haven't learned to drive the boat yet!! :D
