Best to remove the lower unit.-----As far as I know there are only 2 fasteners that hold the lower unit on.-----That what is shown in the picture is a mystery to me.

I'm sorry, not grasping what youre saying...why do I need to remove the lower unit?

I spent an hour digging thru old pictures of my '84 and '85 9.8's that I had. I remember a bolt with a reduced hex head, however a socket head would work.

Unless you're adding an anode, leave it be. It's not holding anything on unless you add the anode...
