What exactly does the stator do? How do you check it and change it out.

The stator produces voltage that feeds the switchboxes to produce spark. On your motor, the stator also produces voltage to charge the battery.

The stator is located under the flywheel. The flywheel must be removed to get to it. Resistance values are available at the CDI Electronics web site. These can determine if the stator is bad/good.

check e-bay, they have some good brands for better prices. You might even get a used one if you want to risk it.

Re: 1984 90 h.p. inline 6 stator question

Started doing some checking this evening and found the two yellow wires to the rectifier from stator shorted out. One was burned in half. We spliced new wires into them just for the heck of it and it is now firing on some cylinders. I ohmed the stator and it seemed to be in the limits . I will get deeper tommorow but suspect short destroyed some other parts before fuse blew.
