Re: 1984 Cheetah 170 restore

splashed this weekend but was short lived after about an hour started knocking got it almost back to the dock stop knocking but lost power after get it home and pulling the motor out of the boat found a broken rod in #2 cylinder. Piston and rod bearing are not seized so maybe i have the timing to advanced (which could be a possibility) with a weak rod

Re: 1984 Cheetah 170 restore

Ok so I haven't posted anything on this thread for a long time. After finding another motor replaced it got it running in the drive but after three attempts to go to lake and no joy kept dying when shifting I got frustrated and put it up for the season. Then spring came and with some help for others here and starting with a fresh attitude. I found my problem to be my shift cable alignment was part of my problem and the fact that the shift cable wasn't tight at the out drive end. Then off to the lake for a test drive all went well the first few times out other some WOT issue and a little rattling in the motor. The forth time out the lower shift cable came out of the shift plate end when trying to launch so no going into drive pulled it out of the lake and found problem fixed that then the shift cable alignment was off again so ever time from forward to neutral it died (which sucks when your son is trying to learn to knee board). Once again back to the shift cable alignment while testing the throttle cable broke full throttled the boat in the drive for about 20 secs. While fixing the throttle broke wires in the control box for the trim switches got them fixed got the throttle cable fixed then trying to start the motor its locked up. Then thought I had toasted the engine after a little testing found it to be my lower unit. Replaced it got everything aligned or so I thought got to the lake spent an hour test drive when slowing down at the no wake at the marina went to neutral and didn't want to go back into forward. Got it to go back into forward and back to the dock. One last challenge it died at the I couldn't get it started and had to push and winch it on the trailer. Today got all the starting issues worked out and hopefully the damn shift cable alignment right. Now if there is anyone reading my thread you are caught up to date.
