1984 Cobia Odyssey 170 VBR rebuild project

Tried my first attempt at "peanut butter" Temperature is sitting around high 60s here, 50% humidity. Taking forever to harden. Made a pint of resin, a little more than 5 drops of hardener, about 3 or 4 tablespoons of chopped 1/4", and about 8 tablespoons of cabosil. Got some space heaters shooting at it now. Will see how it comes out tomorrow, I guess, cause it aint hardening at all now, almost 2.5 hours later.

Well there's about 473ml in a pint you need 1.5% of MEK to make it harden. There's about 20 drops in 1 ml. Soooo you should have added about 94 drops of hardener (4.7ML)!!!

Yeah, I just figured that out. The mix ratio is in cc, not drops. Glad I didn't screw up too bad, cause all I have to do is wipe it off cause it will never harden like this Thats why I call it first attempt

hot diggity! PB sets better when you use the right amount of hardener Got a syringe (for babies) over at the drugstore, drew up my 5ml/pint, added a crapload of cabosil, and voila! Applying heat now from my space heater to assist in the cure. Tomorrow will sand down fillets and put on the biaxial. 2 runs of 38" should help keep her dry

Ok got transom wrapped, PB'd the plywood for the tow holders and found that I had air at the edges where the transom meets the hull. Sanded it all off, gonna patch it with 1708. Wanna make a tight fit, no air, and was thinking about clamping the 1708 to the transom after wetting the edges, so it will be a tight fit, no air. Then I would wet the remainder, cut off the excess, and wet whatever got missed before. Make sense?

Got transom peanut buttered in, tabbed with 1708, and PL'd the first stringers. Not pretty, but this is my first fiberglass project

Looking like your making progress OMC!. FYI if you have any hard 90 degree angles in the future make some pb and give the edge a gentle slop{filet} so your glass will conform easier. Little more work but makes the bubbles work out better. Either horizontal or vertical doesn't matter. It will make your glassing life a lot easier.
I would wet out all the glass you referenced but no clamps. If it sets up you and is not wet out you will have to grind that out also. and redo.

Got all the stringers capped and tabbed. Gonna put on the cleats for the deck after I put in the ski locker floor. going with 3/4" plywood for the deck. Gas tank is tight too.

Got the cleats in, false floor for locker and gas tank, motor mounts pb'ed in. Got to tab the mounts in, sand it down, and start cutting the deck FINALLY

Latest update: Got the front deck installed, peanut buttered, tabbed, seams as well, and today I poured my first foam! Little hiccup on my gas filler line, origimal was short a few inches after putting in actual wood stringers (instead of waterlogged paper and collapsed fiberglass) so hadda order 7 ft line. Will have the entire deck installed by Friday I hope, including foam. By the way, the foam filled each compartment perfectly per each quart used. Temp in shop was 80 degrees F so it kicked perfectly. Of course i sweated a few buckets. Not sure if i want to gel coat deck or just 1708 the entirety after install. Not interested in making her pretty until I verify it don't sink and runs

All of the deck is now installed. PB'd today, tab and foam tomorrow. Thinking I need to foam the outermost sections of the deck, won't take much. Like Friscoboater, I knocked on the side after the foam and it is SOLID. Gonna go up to the boat junk yard in Dawsonville to find some seats. Wanna use pedestal cause the old ones were wooden boxes, which rotted out years ago and I replaced them. After I sand it out, gonna roll out the rest of my 1708 on the deck and call it a day. Next up will be to adjust rocker arms on engine and set the timing right so I won't have to play with it after install.

We're getting their, slow but sure. Weather here in Georgia is friggin hot, so i have to work in the wee hours of the morning to avoid dehydration and pass out

Deck is completely installed. Helm supports in place, seat bases installed. Inside gunnels cut, inside panels cut, gonna coat them in resin tomorrow. Waiting for staples, of all things, so I can finish the re-upholstering of the bilge cover, etc...Called West Marine, asked if they had the Arrow 508M1 T50s, they said they did. Drove all the way up there, had one box, open, dripping staples. Guess I have to be more specific next time?

Not sure if 10 yds of vinyl will cover all my tasks.For the first time in forever, uncoiled all the electrical wiring so I can install the new wood. Another huge step forward. Seems like all my delays are related to waiting for parts One thing: The carpet I want to use is cheap, Lowes brand (Coronado Stratos gray Outdoor Carpet). Dipped a piece in water and then let set overnight. Looks like it dries out ok. Any thoughts?

Carpet laid, not velcro'd yet cause I'm gonna roll it up when installing engine. Seats installed, all wiring harnesses and fishfinder cables ran and cleaned. Tomorrow take off valve covers and do final valve adjust. S/b installing by weekend. Hadda minor setback cause my truck tranny died, then the car I borrowed had its transmission go belly up too

LOL, yeah using the old 3.8. I rebuilt it after trashing my block. And the restore would've been quicker if the weather hadn't kicked my butt over and over. Freezes and then 90 degree got me jerked around because of water freezes for the motor rebuild, temps too low for polyester resin, then temps so high the resin would kick in 5 minutes at the lowest mix ratio

My proudest accomplishment is that the missus was able to park her car in the garage every night even with the boat rebuild running. If momma's happy, everyones happy
