So I am buying my first boat. Something I've always wanted. Just so happens I'm getting a great deal on this cross craft. However it does need work. It seems to be over heating at idle speeds. I talked to a friend and he said replace the impeller. Now comes the fun part. I tried to find the serial number on the outdrive but some of the numbers have worn away. I have looked extensively online and from what I can tell it's an alpha gen 1. But upon my investigation someone through a wrench in things and said there are R's MR's etc. how do I tell what impeller kit I need? Is there a way without tearing it apart?

This is an original microfiche from Mercruiser. I don't know if it will help you identify your unit, but I hope so. I have a Pre-Alpha 165, and I know there really isn't any difference in the impellers, but I'm not sure about the Alpha model. Is there still a serial number sticker on the exhaust elbow coming off the manifold?

I thought Chris Craft was using OMC in the mid 80's

I have the exact same boat and ended up back and forth at the boat store a few times. I have a pre-alpha on mine, but my advice would be to take it out and match it up.

Series 1 (MC-1) ,R uses a slightly different base, the top components are the same as Alpha.
,MR,Alpha use the same pump components as the previous drive ,only its base is slightly different.
MC1, early drives have a loop in the upper cap,R ,MR,Alpha have flat tops
MC1 has a rounded cav plate, R,MR, Alpha are square
Sierra 18-3320 should be the complete kit for your drive
