Re: 1984 doral inboard question

so judging by that post i can assume my 4.3 wont work because it has the 1 piece real main seal. the flywheel has been retrofitted to fit my out drive by the previous owner but i don't really understand why the manifolds off my 3.8 wont work with my 4.3 they look identical . what cars cam with a 3.8 just encase i cant make the 4.3 work. i am also trying to identify my out drive. it has a the following numbers on it
model# 983487
serial#j342073

does that make it a stringer800?

The 3.8 manifolds wont clear the raised valve cover rails of the 4.3 heads. No 3.8 car cam is suitable for marine use, but any cam grinder can regrind yours into a marine profile.

ok well that make a little more sense i matched the heads and manifolds together and they lined up i never tried them with the valve covers on. so if found a 3.8l out of a car and put my cam shaft out of my blown up 3.8 marine engine would that work.

ok so 4.3 is no longer an option....the manifolds wont bolt up to the heads due to the valve cover clearence....as explained above...so what are my options for my boat...only a 3.8....where do i find one?

Re: 1984 doral inboard question

your outdrive is an 800 series stringer, yes

kijiji and craigslist are sources for rebuildable 229 chevrolet V6's
229s were made from 1980-1984 and put in Chevrolet cars (Malibu, Monte Carlo, Caprice), Checker cabs and lots of boats never used in trucks except the ElCamino

edelbrock EDL2112 cam is same as marine grind and is still available from Summit

so i found a 3.8l out of a 81 malibu. they say there only rated for 110hp acording to gm review. .it only has 82000km on the car....if i was to put the cam out of my marine 3.8 would it generate some miraculous hp gains.?

Re: 1984 doral inboard question

yep, 110 rating on that IraqiTaxi was the result of the cam and fuel.

with the marine OMC cam, or EDL2112, you'll make 170HP with a 2 BBL, and 185HP with a 4BBL

sad what smog controls were doing in the 80's

Edelbrock EDL2112 - comes with lifters for around $150

yours is probably fine though, but you pay $50 Cdn. for the lifters anyways locally

you need 12 new lifters regardless

yeah for sure my brother is the chevy man in the family. is there much more performance stuff i could do to the motor before i put it in to ensure max performance. probably only run a 2 barrel carb for now since i already have one.

Re: 1984 doral inboard question

use lots of hot soapy water on a summer day and all you'll need to remove is the propeller
if you take your time, you can stretch the boot over the entire drive.

however, I can have my drive off and sitting in a wheelbarrow in 20 minutes.

you change the boot from the outside, not the inside
