I rebuilt the carbs on my buddy's 1984 DT60 earlier this spring. I finally went over to see if we could get it to crank. All I got was a click from the solenoid. The starter was getting very hot, but the starter never moved. Is this solenoid bad or is it the starter? How should I proceed? Thanks, SM

check all connections are shinny clean and tight. A loose battery cable will not supply enough ampage to make the starter spin so it will just heat up instead.

Thanks Glenn. I checked the all pretty good including wires from the solenoid to the starter. Could I touch the starter wires to the battery terminals just to make sure the starter isn't seized up?? Once I check all the wires again, is there any way to test the solenoid? The book I have on that motor isn't very good. Doesn't really touch on anything in depth about the starter. Thanks, SM

jump a hot lead to the starter motor to see if it will spin, If not you can take the starter apart clean it good and replace the brushes not the hardest job in the world, just helps to have a extra set of hands

I suppose a set of jumper cables would do the trick, right?? Do I also hook up the negative battery post to the negative on the starter as well?? Thanks!

Ok, I went and checked the connections. All were tight. Still just got a click. I pulled the starter off and hooked a set of jumper cables up and got nothing. So, I guess I am rebuilding it now, right? Thanks, SM
