i have a problem with the gas going to the motor. This year: it will run fine then starve for fuel. If i pump the bulb it will continue to run fine. Last year: the same problem sometimes, other times the bulb would suck tight only when the motor was in the lake. i replaced the hose and the gas tank. and other times it would run perfectly. it basically has a mind of its own. i haven't put the boat in the water yet this year. any ideas?? thanks in advance

Well...you say this year it runs fine and then starves for fuel and then go on to say you haven't had it in the water this year so I will assume your barrel testing it this year. So lets focus on this year. You may well have a week fuel pump however I don't think the pump is designed to pull fuel from floor level to your engine. Try to elevate the tank by placing it on a chair that is more closely matched to the height of the tank to the motor in a boat. The other obvious thing is are you venting the tank? Many people forget this important step. You say if you pump the bulb it continues to run fine. By doing that you (and the bulb) have become the fuel pump, again leading me to think it is a weak fuel pump. If elevating the tank doesn't fix it then try to elevate the tank a couple of feet above the engine and try that. If that works then it is your fuel pump. LAST year. By replacing the tank and hose I think you resolved some of the possible problems. A flat bulb is usually a symptom of an unvented tank and sometimes a clogged tank screen. Let us know what you find. Never give up. I find fishing more frustrating than motors but when they aren't biting and the motor isn't running ....well it just doesn't get any worse. Here is a site that may give you some information and will make you more familiar with your motor. Best of luck. Rick.

Well, they have pumps for pretty cheap now, in fact the complete pump was around $80.00 and the kit was about $20.00, but since I did mine I have seen new pumps for under $40.00, so it's hardly worth rebuilding them at that price.

On a stand, with the engine in a trash can, my 9.9 easily lifts the fuel with the tank on the ground, so should yours if the pump is any good. My pump had enlarged one of the four screw holes on the diaphragm, it had shrunk with age and pulled the hole into an oval shape causing it to leak and not pump well at low throttle. Sometimes the engine would die after running slow, trolling for a while. A rebuild of the pump cured that.

Where can you get a fuel pump for $40.00?
