I saw the torque and tightening sequence for the cylinder head bolts on the 84 Evinrude 235. This motor has 20 bolts which fasten the water jacket to the cylinder head independently of the head bolts. Is the torque the same? I would be surprised if it is. Please help.

Thanks! I bought it without doing the usual checks except opening the bottom lower unit screw. I actually tried turning it over to check compression, but my connections were poor and the starter spun but didn't engage. When I got it home, I found the compression was exactly 75 lbs. on all 6. I was leery of that # but I remembered my buddy having 50lbs on his 78 85 which ran amazingly well. Then I saw your answer to a post saying 85-95lbs was factory. That gave me confidence. I started it, and it ran, though it was spitting gas from the manual choke solenoid. It got hot after maybe 2 min. The thermostats were caked in salt. I pulled the head covers, but not the heads[I hope not to have to, as I am a chicken. I hate extracting broken head bolts. Maybe I'll get lucky.] There was some salt, but the passages were not blocked. The tilt trim needed an o-ring on the manual release, I changed the lower unit oil, cleaned all surfaces, and now i am about to put the covers on and try again. One more thing. I have to admit, the welded heavy square tube stand on casters it came with is what made me fork over 500 big ones. It has perfect balance and belies the 400+ lbs of this motor. Probably worth the 500 bucks for that. Thanks again!

I have 2 ( 1982 ) of these motors on my boat.----If compression was 75 PSI on them they would come apart in a heart beat !!!-----Install a new impeller before launching the boat.

The new water pump kit was top of the list. I am waiting for my son(boat partner) to come over to help put the lower back in. Since I have your attention, what exactly is the purpose of the tiny hoses from the block to what appears to be the intake?

There are oil recirculation hoses.-----And there are wee hoses from the electric primer valve..------Electric primer VALVE is used for cold starting.-----Key is to be pushed in while cranking it over for near instant starting.

My friend thought so, but it is good to hear it confirmed. I broke the brass nipple on one. I put a safety pin through it and into the block. Then I marine texed it. After it hardened I pulled the pin out. It seems good, solid, and I was able to push the pin in and out. A few more details and I should be testing it. My 1986 25' Wellcraft Coastal only weighs 3700lbs and when my 94 225 was running well it did 39mph. Supposedly, this motor doesn't have as much horsepower at the prop, so if I get 30 I will be satisfied. I am not in a hurry. Getting out and getting back without having to use my reliable little 15hp kicker is my idea of a good day. Thanks for your expertise.
