1984 evinrude 55hp

hello all. i have a 1984 evinrude that we were having numerous problems with. we have managed to figure out almost all the problems we are having, but still one remains. we can start the engine fine via ripcord or electric start. idles great. in gear it is great as well. if i open the engine up to 3/4 it runs great, and in fact better then it has ever run, but if i push it any further the motor just quits and shuts off. i cant figure it out. i have a repair manual but it is not clear how to do the link and sinc that i suspect is the problem. if anyone could please provide the "lync and sync instruction for dummies" so i can make sure that i have missed nothing i would be extremity grateful.
