You can compare me to Gilligan when it comes to boats, but here it goes. We recently purchased a 1969 Starcraft with a 1984 Evinrude 70 hp motor. We took it out on the lake on Sunday and it started to bog down. It opened up fine at the start (of course we had to test it) but then, after tooling around in the no wake zones, it would start to bog down and stall. On the motor itself, it says 3-cycle. Can anyone please tell me the exact gas mix to use. Also, the prop is kind of chewed a bit, is that a big deal? And, do you have any suggestion as to the type of ladder to get so that we can tube and swim?? Sorry it's so long. I really appreciate your time and expertise!!!!!! Thanks :D

AnneMarie,

Your engine is a three CYLINDER. It uses a 50:1 fuel/oil ratio-which works out to be one piunt of oil to six gallons of gas. Use 87 octane only.

The oil should be a good quality and look for the letters "TCW-3" on the label. If it's not there, don't use it.

Yes, get that prop fixed-it is not helping your lower unit.

As far as bogging goes, give us a little more info.

Such as:

1. What is wide open throttle rpm?
2. Does the engine stall? When? What are you doing.
3. Does the fuel hose primer bulb remain hard once pumped up?

Thank you so much for that information. You see, I now believe that it was bogging down because we didn't have the correct mix in the motor. There already was some gas in the tank, so we just finished filling up the tank! Sure hope we didn't mess anything up!!!!!!!
