1984 Evinrude 8hp E8RLCRM water in exhaust update and question

Late last year I noticed a fair amount of steam coming from my motor, and was concerned something had failed. So far I have replaced head gasket, thermostat, cleaned and check the passages for flow, and rebuilt the water pump assembly. After tuning it up I ran it today for about 15 minutes in my test barrel. Water pump is working well, stat is working, old plugs did not show signs of "steaming" but I noticed water droplets coming from the exhaust port under the thermostat. When running on the water I am sure to get some steam, but at this point is this pretty much normal anyway or something else I should check? Replaced the grommet in the water pump, could not really tell much about the one under the power head. I may be worrying about nothing here. Anyone else have this motor? It is a long shaft.

Note- the head gasket did not look bad, the thermostat was old, but was working, and impeller had one vane broke off and and needed replacing.

Did you recover the broke off vane? If not I would be concerned about where it went to!

"BUMP"

bascially folks, what I am asking is that if any of you folks with an early to mid 80's 6 or 8hp Evinrude notice any water coming out of the exhaust baffle under the thermostat housing when you run your motor? The motor seems fine to me, but still a little water coming out of that port. May be no big deal...just asking.

water should only exit your motor from three spots, 1 the tell tale. 2 the upper exhaust relief. 3 the exhaust at the lu. if its dripping water under the cowl its time to investigate a bit more.

I think "exhaust baffle under the thermostat housing" is confusing folks...could you post a pic or go to marineengine.com and find a diagram or part # for this baffle?

Sure...here it is. Look at #80. The water comes out at the pee hole fine, as well as the LU exhaust. This is listed as "exhaust baffle" in the parts section. There is NO leakage under the cowl. This may more of a "relief" port as mentioned by nwcove. It sits right under the thermostat housing on the outside of the motor. I am still fairly new to the outboards, although I am learning a great deal with working with this motor. I got it last year and did not notice anything until I saw a large amount of steam one fall day. Taking it out Sunday for first run of the year.

Thanks! We had gotten it stuck last year prior to that in a NASTY grass pile and even though I was careful to watch the pee stream etc. I was concerned I might have done something when I saw the steam. At least now I have new thermostat, new gaskets, and new impeller as well as learning about these motors.
