hello, i recently bought an 84 evinrude 9.9. I'm tearing this down and trying to revive this motor. Curious as to where the ground wire from the swivel bracket goes to? it was dismantled when i received motor. I'm assuming to a bolt undeneath that goes to exhaust housing? I looked at the schematic, but pic doesn't show. Thank you.

^^snakebit while typing. or one of those big Florida lizards. He'll be OK.

Did you figure out the t.stat cover on that thing? (or removal and reassembly of the head cover?) Kind of tricky because of clearances.

Haven?t taken the head off yet. Or changed thermostat. Had to remove exhaust housing and change swivel bracket first

??----Ir was already suggested to remove the cylinder head.-----If that is too easy you can remove the latch on the rear of the cowling.-----On some motors / years that gives you enuff room to remove the waterjacket cover.----A bit more of a challenge but I think you can handle it.

It is a B____ that is for sure! The handle must come out and those 2 lower bolts are doozies to boot. The design was made better in later models and years and a more modular construction makes the lower cowling much more easy to take off and access the engine. Even the engine is easy to take out. Just when they almost perfected these 2 strokes the environmental wacko progressives forced the industry to bring out the dog 4 strokes. The carb still had the hard as hell to access bolts, whereas some Jap motors went to studs that screwed in instead of nuts to screw on. Huge improvement.

It's pretty simple. Loosen the two bottom head cover bolts, but leave them in the cover (no room to fully remove them). Take out the other bolts, and lift the head cover out vertically. When removed, you can work on the t.stat cover on the workbench. The '84 has a couple of bolts at the bottom of the t.stat cover, and that's an improvement over earlier models (lower left side tended to leak, in my experience). I would resurface both the t.stat cover and the head cover before reinstalling. Use a piece of wet/dry sandpaper on a flat surface, and move the mating surfaces in a figure eight motion until you get a uniform shine.

Need new head gasket and t.stat gasket.

[edit., probably a good idea to resurface both mating surfaces for the t.stat cover -- cover and the t.stat side of the head cover.]

box wrench? Think Flyingscott mentioned that in your other thread. Maybe a shallow socket and a vise grip if you have to improvise.

trying to remove the head cover with t.stat cover attached, right? Then work on the t.stat cover and stat when flat on the workbench. (just so there is no misunderstanding....)

Sorry i just saw these replies. Well i was trying to take off t-stat housing first, I managed to get it off, but it would probably be impossible to get it back on. I had an off brand box wrench trying to take off cylinder head bolt, couldn't get wrench on there. Went through some of my dad's tools that i inherited when he passed away and found a 1/2" craftsman wrench that went right on. Anyway, yes i took the cylinder head off. Thank you guys so much. I know I'll have other questions. Thx again
