Hello,

Can anyone tell me where the fuel pump is located at? I have posted here before and got responses but nothing has worked yet. Thought it was a manifold bolt but that wasn't it either. Have put new wires and plugs and a new gas line on there. Checked the gas vent for obstruction. Cranks great and will run great in the yard but put it in gear on the water and it will only go about 5 miles per hour, if that. Have cleaned (with carborator cleaner)the filter that is located inside a clear cone-shaped cover. Was told that the line from the bottom of the filter leads to another filter but can't seem to locate it. Need some ideas of where to look for that filter and any other ideas of what the problem could be...

thanks in advance for any help I can get,

Shannon Smith

Shannon
You have a 1986 model
I recommend a factory manual that will be VERY useful if you are going to attempt repairs or maintenance. Try theoutboardwizard.com to obtain the manual.

Sounds like its time for removal of the carbs and a thorough cleaning of them. If you reference the manual while doing it, it isn't very difficult. Use an aerosol carb cleaner on the black plastic carb bodies. Make sure you shoot some through all the orifices you can find on the carb. Follow that up with some compressed air to make sure they are cleaned out good.

While you have them apart, it would be a good time to install new carb kits (ie. new gaskets, needle valve, float, etc.). You can purchase the kits from any Evinrude/Johnson dealer. You'll need one kit for each carb you have. Not sure how many the 90hp has. I would guess four, but I'm not sure. It should be obvious once you get the big black air cover off to expose the carbs.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Cheers.

Just realized I referenced the "black plastic" carb bodies....not sure if the 1986 90 hp had the plastic carbs or not (I know the 120, 140, etc. did). Either way, they still need to be cleaned....just follow the steps in the manual.

Good luck.

Re: 1984 evinrude gas problem

First off, I'd like to thank everyone who has helped us thus far. This is Bassman's wife and I'm tired of hearing about this stinking boat. If you could continue on with your help I would be ever so greatful, 'cause I need to get some sleep at night instead of trying to fix a boat engine. He's cleaned the carbs and still no luck. One guy says sounds like the Power Pack for the choke. Took the cover to the carbs off, have a push key choke, and right now, without pushing the key or anything, the chokes are closed. When he pushes the key in to activate the choke it clicks but the chokes remain closed. Is this the way it is supposed to work? Or should they be open and then close when he pushes the key in? If someone would please help us once again it would greatly apreciated.

P.S. When he took the black cover off that reveals the carbs a significant amount of gas ran out,,,,,,,is this norma;?

thanks again,
Mrs. Bassman

Re: 1984 evinrude gas problem

Hey Mrs Bassman....I got the same engine.

First off, there is no choke plates on this engine. There is a primer solenoid that takes the place of the choke plates. When you push the key in, the primer solenoid engergizes and shoots fuel into the reed cage area behind each carb. so you won't see any thing move when the key is depressed.

Let's get some history here. Is this a new motor to you folks or is the problem a new one? When was the last time the engine had a tune up and the carbs overhauled? If you had a lot of gas running from the carbs, might be time for a carb job. With the cover to the carbs off, squeeze the primer bulb. If the primer bulb pumps up snug and no fuel comes out of the carbs, that's good. If gas comes out the carbs as you squeeze the bulb.....that's bad. Do we know what the compression is on each cylinder?

Near any motor will run good out of the water. If she starts in the water but dies when put in gear, either it's fuel or you need the linkages synced.

But let's start with the above questions and stuff and go from there.

You folks really should have a service manual. OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) manuals are prefered. You can get reprints from the Ken Cook Co......just do a search and you'll find it.

PS....we'll do all we can to help you get some sleep at night..... :D
