Just purchased a 19 ft Manatee with a 1984 -100 hp V4 Commercial outboard. Seller said when he last used it he lost speed and increased rpm's. The prop will not turn when motor is running and forward & reverse shift is applied. Any thoughts as to the extent of the repair or what may be the problem?

Thanks,

Don

Re: 1984 Evinrude V4 lower Unit ??

Welcome Don!

Sounds like a spun hub. This is when the rubber hub in the props center loses it's grip and spins out. Common thing.

If you want to check, pull the prop off and with a marking pen or water proof marker, make a reference line from the rubber hub out to the props metal that surrounds the hub. After the problem occurs again, remove the prop and check the reference line. If the reference line on the rubber hub has moved, hub is spun.

If it is spun, you can have it rehubbed at any good prop shop or sometimes dealers can have them sent out.

Thanks..

I will take it to a reccommended OB repair shop. I thought it may be a spun hub but want the motor gone over and serviced anyway, so maybe this problem won't be a big expense!

I had the same problem with an 84 Evinrude 115. It turned out that the Driveshaft sheared.
