Will this prop fit?

http://www.boat-props.com/propeller...id=171&**********=751865973&*******=325172898

Also, will any 15 tooth splined prop with non-thru-hub exaust work?

Or narrow a little bit to any force 15 tooth non-thru-hub exaust proppeler?

Thanks

The reason I ask is that a lot of websites do not sell a 85 hp 1984 propeller.

Also, I have a 1984 17 foot bayliner capri. What pitch prop do you recomend if I'm going to be pulling skiers with 3-6 people in the boat plus the skier?

Please ask prop questions in the Prop Forum. Going there.

Re: 1984 Force 85 propellers that fit?

Chrysler started making the one piece lower unit in (I think) the early 1980s and this same lower unit was continued into the Force line. This lower unit is the same externally for all 75-140 engines up to (again I think) late 80s. Any prop for these engines --including some thru hub exhaust props-- will work. It's just a question of what pitch you need.

If you have the option to try without buying, (you know, drive the boat to the marina) some Merc props will fit also.

The only thing is that with some of the thru hub props, the black plastic flare washer will not fit. You need to buy (they used to make them) a splined spacer to fit behind the prop nut and washer or make a spacer yourself.

With your boat and that load, you would want to go no higher than 17 inch pitch prop, maybe even a 15 if you can't get the acceleration to pull out the skier quickly. But your top speed will suffer a little.

Thanks for the info, this really helps.

So that black plastic thing is supposed to be there? It looked to me like the owner before me rigged it up to work. The prop had 1/2 inch of play back and forth down the output shaft.

So, when I install the propeller it goes like this.

Propeller --> black plastic taperd thing that pushes against the propeller --> what appears to be a standard flat washer --> a nut

Is this corrent? I have a feeling that standard flat washer is wrong. I think I'm supposed to get one of these?

So if I get a prop that fits, but need the spacer it would go like this?

Installation: Propeller --> Plastic tapered washer --> spacer --> washer --> nut

For reasons I don't know, the black tapered thing is called an "anti cavitation washer". The photo is the spacer that takes its place. Even with it you still need the flat washer. If you have the long prop shaft, there is also a black plastic cone that fits inside the black washer and is held with a screw that goes through the prop shaft just in front --or behind depending on your terminology-- of the prop nut.
If your prop had 1/2 inch of play, the thrust washer behind it may have been missing. It is a stepped washer with a tapered hole that fits over the shaft and mates with the inside of the prop hub. Many times they corrode and jam tight into the prop hub. Often, they are dropped in the river when changing props. This washer transfers prop thrust loads to the shaft and keeps the prop from rubbing against the gearcase. If for some reason you can not get a Force thrust washer, a Merc one will fit; it has a slightly different taper but will do. They do break, so it is wise to carry an extra one on board.
So: The correct assembly is : thrust washer, prop, black plastic flare washer-- or spacer, plain washer, prop nut, and black plastic tail cone if used.

Re: 1984 Force 85 propellers that fit?

Thanks a lot. I think I have everything figured out now, and everything seems to be working with the boat. Took it out just a little while ago. The boat does not leak one bit, is very comfy, engine starts very easy, goes into gear easy, and appears to run perfect. However, I am disapointed in the wholeshot. I think the mangled prop that is on it now might have something to do with it. (I know, i know, i shouldn't be driving it with a mangled prop, but I just had to try it out to see if I needed to start working on anything else.) I have the trim leakdown problem though and it appears as if I have the unserviceable unit :(

O ya, I had the thrust washer, just didn't notice it.

Thanks again
