I recently purchased this motor off C-list. Motor is running, replaced water pump impellor, rebuilt carb and installed new plug. Motor starts on 1st or 2nd pull. Shifts in and out of gear. Only problem I've noticed is seems to be side to side play when I push against the flywheel. I'm thinking the bearings for the crankshaft are probably shot. Can these be found and if so how much trouble are they to replace and are all the gaskets I need available as well. Right now I've got about 75 - 100$ in the motor. Am I just as well to run it until it dies or invest the time and money to try and add new life to it?

Every thing you need can be found if you know what to look for and where, I have done complete bearing jobs on AV817 7.5's....but crank play is normal, generally its the lower crank bearing thats most worn and its a common $10 part....the top bearing is a trouble maker Torrington y 148 because there no longer made so you have to substitute, I use a INA 148 caged bearing on my last one, cost me all of $4 the actual recommended part would be a koyo y 148 about $22, seals you basically have to measure shaft size's and just pick out one from say SKF. http://www2.chicago-rawhide.com/popup_parts_lookup_457010.htm

I used motion industries for most bearings http://www.motionindustries.com/motion3/jsp/mii/productSearch.jsp
I used ebay for the INA caged bearing

and www.certifiedpartscorp.com for almost all gaskets, I had to get sears to order the stator base gaskets because nobody had them at the time and nobody had wanted to order enough to have them made...sears finally relinted and got somebodys old stock tecumseh parts for me....the stator plate gasket can make you or break you because of the clearances from the crank to the babbit race on the inside of the plate.. all in all its a can of worms,

Re: 1984 Gamefisher 7.5

Thanks for all of the info. I don't plan on using it much, more of a play toy than a heavy use motor. I've got it on a 12' starcraft v hull. Might try and take it out for a test run this weekend just to see how it does. I just acquired the registration for the boat this week and would like to take it on a short joyride to try it out. The rebuild will be a winter project if I decide to do it. The motor starts easily and idles well, just noticed the play in the crank and thought I would try and get some info about tightening it up. I wouldn't consider it "sloppy" but the play is noticeable. Thanks again for the info and suggestions.
