There is no good news when restoring a old boat. Mine was a huge pain to remove, and even then it was doable, my first time too. Yours will most likely come off easier.

"popping the cap" sounds worse than it is. Although it can be a big job, it gives you great access to ALL the wood that may need to be replaced.

Here is another question and pic. The whole back end is fiberglass even where the motor is mounted its all gelcoated like the outside of the boat as you can see from the pic. How or would i need to cut all that nice fiberglass out to do the transom??

Like Don S, one of ou Moderators says "Why is there never enough time to do it right the first time,
But always enough time to do it again?"

Taking the top cap off is NOT that big of an issue, but in your case, is a necessity. Do some searching here on the forum and you will see that you can do it in a day.

So has anyone ever thought to use something like dryloc?? Because i am a fish hobbyist and have done several 300 plus gallon aquariums using this to seal the wood and then one layer of epoxy over that. And they have held water for 5+ years now no leaks..would this not work for keeping water off the wood?? Just thought i would throw it out there...got all my supplies now just need to break it all down.
