1984 Grumman 5.0 CC Restore (in the beginning...)

Well, I'm not sure how much of a restore I will do as I'm aiming for a functional boat so I don't care that much on how it looks but also want to do a good job for anything I do on it.

I bought it last summer but juts started working on it today. Might have some questions for you guys. Forum has been great so far and given me a lot of insight on what is ahead of me.

Looks to me like, first thing you need to do is check the transom for rot. It looks suspicious at first glance.

I removed the motor expecting rot. However, the plywood is still in tact. I do fear that someone used pressure treated though as there is some corrosion in spots. I might removed the plywood either way. I plan to replace some of that corroded aluminum.

it is cold here but as we say here in NE if you don't like the weather, wait an hour or two... it will change.

snowing out right now actually. Just because I took the motor off and have everything open up. My luck right?

Might pull it into the garage as soon as the 10 foot snowbank at the end of my driveway clears. It was 16+ft 3 weeks ago.

OK got the fishbox/seat out, center console out, controls and the floors. Now for the fun part.

Deja vu!! I went thur this process about 5 or so years ago. I have a 1984 that I got back in 2002. It sat outside since 1988 uncovered and unused. It was going to get donated to YMCA for a tax break but I took it. I did a complete resto as you are doing, started in 2002 . I had moss growing on the floor or should I say what was left of the floors. Big project. Engine only had 100-250 hours on it, never been apart except for carbs for the major rebuild /cleanup. Boat is stilll used to this day. Many compliments when it is out on the water. It is mainly used for fishing in saltwater. I had to redo the transom last year as the corners were rotted. You may want to look close in that area. I was able to flex the transom by lifting up on the motor when it was trimmed up and the transom would flex. Fun boat. With the 75 I can get 44 mph on gps with only me in the boat. Do yourself a favor and put on a dolphin tab on the motor, save some fuel.

So how bad is a transom replacement on a 5.0? I am thinking about getting one that has been out in the weather for a loooong time. It apparently has a 2nd motor on it and there is some corrosion around the old engine mount area but for the most part the upper transom area seemed solid but the lower part where the motors bottom mounting bolts mounted were soft. Anyone ever use a sheet of that white acrylic board to reinforce a transom? We have it in 1/2" and 3/4" in my area. I thought about putting one on the outside and one on the inside with some sealant around it as well.

And while we are at it ... does $600.00 seem like a fair price for the boat? I realize an investment will be needed to get it looking presentable but it looks like a good hull and design. I like the idea of aluminum since I have two fiberglass boats already (19' w/150hp & 21' w/350 cid). I am actually thinking to put a truck liner that is glossy on the bottom to really seal the boat.

acnas, great to see another 5.0 around. Sounds like you found a good one. I will likely buy a newer motor for this. Maybe a 4 stroke. I love the layout of this boat. It seems so simple and durable to me.

This is my 2nd boat and will be used for saltwater. I have a newer one that I have been focussed on lately to get some new stuff into her. Been nipping at removing and stripping down the 5.0 though. Going to soda blast the bottom soon.

accentphoto, that seems like a good price if you are willing to put the work into it. That is the thing with these types of boats. They are projects. Cheaper to buy a newer boat if you plan to pay someone else to do the work. Some people feel more comfortable with fiberglass repair and some with aluminum. I like aluminum for several reason including weight. I'm going to suggest against a repair as you are mentioning with the transom. I plan to replace mine including some of the aluminum and have it welded. Good luck.

I am still wrangling on the price with the owner. I would love to see more photos of your boat floor replacement. Did you strip out the floor foam? Toying with different materials for the floor if we get this one. I have some Huber Advantech 50yr flooring wood left over that I thought I would use with a elastomateric paint on the floor to hull side, the edges and then spray the truck liner on the floor top after installed to help seal it against the gunnel. I plan on posting something in my own thread soon on repair suggestions and one in the "is it worth it" area I found earlier. I have yet to find out the price of Marine Plywood in my area but from what I have heard two sheets are not cheap (almost $200.00 for both). Maybe two sheets is not even enough. nhangler, I forgot to ask, could you tell me how far apart the bunk boards on your trailer are? I have a similar trailer with another boat on it and I was going to try to preset my trailer to fit the 5.0. Are you soda blasting yourself? How much soda are you expecting to buy? I have a soda blaster about 4 miles down the road but I am not sure if he is very affordable to me with this economy. I do have a 110lb blasting pot but its not for soda and according to everyone I talk to, you really need the proper soda pot for doing this properly. Also, check the different types of Soda out there. The one sold at HF is the Armex one that has the coating on each crystal to keep it from caking due to moisture in the pot.

Have not made much progress on this. Little League is to blame. I also have had to do some intermittent flooring work on my newer boat. Moved some things around on it.

I do plan to soda blast it myself. There is a special grain to use for it, yes.

My trailer is a roller type. The rails are 67" on the trailer at the back at it's widest part. Most bunks can be adjusted quite a bit so as long as you are inside of that you should be fine.

Appreciate the measurement. I may be transferring one 1971 heavy fiberglass tri hull Winner off of its trailer and putting the Grumman 5.0 on it so any "preset" measurements help. I can't wait to figure out how to do this alone. I don't have any special boat supports only lots of 4x4x8's.
