I have a 1984 Johnson 15 HP pull start motor, I've ran this motor for over 6 months with heavy use and never had a problem until recntly.

One day it just didn't start, I eventually found a cracked cam follower and thought I fixed the problem. I still had problems starting the motor and decided to take it to the shop, they rebuilt the carburator and removed the flywheel and check things out. The only corrective action they took was to rebuild the carbs and greased everything up.

Current Problem:
I can't get it to start cold unless I squirt the quick start fluid into the carb, just the smallest squirt and it starts right up. After that it runs great again all day, if I let it sit for more then a couple of hours I need to use the starting fluid again.

This motor use to start cold with one easy pull.

Please help.

Is the choke going fully closed. Make sure that choke pull knob was'nt put in upside down. The notch on the shank face's down.

STOP USING STARTING FLUID!!! the easiest way to burn a hole in a piston!!! if you have to use a spray bottle of premixed fuel, no starter fluid

R.Johnson,

I couldn't belive my eyes when I checked the motor. The choke know was upside down, and when I turned it around the motor started on the first pull after sitting for over a week.

Now I can give up the starting fluid and start fishing again.

You guys are great....

Jerry
