I just bought a boat with a 1984 Johnson 150 that has three bad cylinders. I knew this when I bought the boat but I was a little surprised on what it cost to rebuild the motor. Most places I called want to install a refurbished powerhead at a cost of $4,000 - 5,000. Although it was about 10 years ago, the last V6 Johnson I had rebuilt only cost $1,750. What should this cost and does anybody have a mechanic in the Houston/Clear Lake, Texas area they would recommend for this job?

Thanks for the response, but I was too late. The auction is closed on that motor. If anybody could tell me what to expect on having one rebuilt I would appreciate it. Additionally, if you know where I could find a similar motor with a good powerhead, that would be great as well. The lower unit is brand new and the rest of the motor looks ok. It is just the power head that needs rebuilding....or replacing.

Re: 1984 Johnson 150 Rebuild Cost

I had a Johnson 140 v4 rebuilt in 1990 at about $2500. This included a perfect used block and all new pistons/rings. The crank and rods were ok. Carbs were rebuilt but not the starter. All electrics replaced. Gearcase pulled down, checked and resealed. Repainted. I pulled the head off and took it apart. A real omc mech did everthing else.

If memory serves me right it was just a little less than buying a whole rebuilt motor from one of the motor houses. The only difference was my motor had all new parts and was fit to factory tolerances.

I know its not much help, but I've got 3 V6 crossflows for sale. 1700 to 2000. That should give you an idea of whats out there.

Good luck!
